On correlations between diffuse interstellar bands

چکیده

One way to better apprehend the problem of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is to search for correlations between the bands in a large sample of spectra towards various lines of sight: a strict correlation may imply that a common carrier is at the origin of the bands, whereas a non-correlation means that different species are involved. We propose this observational test for 10 DIBs collected in up to 62 Galactic lines of sight. Strong DIBs do not strictly correlate, and sometimes the correlation is very poor. Only one example of a strict correlation has been found in our sample between the DIBs at 6614 and 6196 Å, that could signify a single carrier for those two bands. The general absence of strict correlations is discussed in the context of molecular carriers for the DIBs.

Diffuse Interstellar Bands in single clouds: new families and constraints on the carriers

We present a survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in single clouds. High resolution and high S/N observations of DIBs towards lines of sight representing very different environments allow to investigate mutual correlations in a large consistent sample of DIBs. The classification of DIBs into families is reviewed and refined according to these results. We find that the selected 44 DIBs ar...

Diffuse Interstellar Band at 5850 as a Member of 5797 Spectroscopic Family

The carriers of diffuse interstellar bands are still mysterious species. There exist many arguments that diffuse bands at 5797 and 5850 angstroms have the same carrier. Using high-resolution spectra of few dozens of reddened stars we have searched mutual correlation between intensities of considered bands. Results of our analysis indicate that 5797 and 5850 really tend to have the same carrier.

The viability of a two-photon absorption mechanism

Recent studies have suggested that a two-photon Lyman alpha driven absorption mechanism in H2 or H + 2 is responsible for the diffuse interstellar absorption bands. This hypothesis differs radically from previous theories on the origin of the diffuse interstellar bands. In order to test the validity of the H+2 hypothesis, a study is undertaken to calculate the exact properties of the H+2 spectr...

The Diffuse Interstellar Bands: A Major Problem in Astronomical Spectroscopy

A critical review of the very long-standing problem of the diffuse interstellar bands is presented with emphasis on spectroscopic aspects of observational, modelling and laboratory-based research. Some research themes and ideas that could be explored theoretically and experimentally are discussed. The article is based on the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy Review Lecture presented at the 60th...

On Ultrasmall Silicate Grains in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

The abundance of both amorphous and crystalline silicates in very small grains is limited by the fact that the 10 mm silicate emission feature is not detected in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). On the basis of the observed IR emission spectrum for the diffuse ISM, the observed ultraviolet extinction curve, and the 10 mm silicate absorption profile, we obtain upper limits on the abundance...
